What is this CE course all about?

More than one hundred years since Angle introduced his now famous classification of malocclusion in 1899, the World Health Organization estimates malocclusions as the third most prevalent oral health problem, following dental caries and periodontal diseases. Dentists also observe high numbers of patients who present with crooked and crowded teeth, bruxism and require orthodontic intervention. In many cases, these signs can indicate a much more serious problem. Underdeveloped upper and lower jaws may indicate an underlying and potentially serious medical condition—sleep disordered breathing including mild-to-moderate obstructive sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea, a condition which affects millions of people of all ages, is often the result of craniofacial developmental deficiencies—putting dentistry on the front line of treating this condition.

Breathe New Life is an innovative course designed to help dentists and their staff begin to connect the dots and to ultimately recognize their essential role.

This course is designed to provide clinical insights and information to help dentists begin the process of integrating sleep therapies into their practice. During this seven and a half hour course, you and your staff will achieve a basic knowledge of the clinical realities facing individuals who suffer from craniofacial developmental deficiencies. Lectures will introduce the key differences between treating the symptoms and addressing the underlying cause. You will gain insight into the anatomy of sleep disordered breathing including obstructive sleep apnea and learn how this problem can and should be addressed in your office. You will hear from leading experts in sleep and breathing health as well as clinicians who are successfully treating patients using a novel protocol and advanced therapeutics.

You will also hear from one of the world’s foremost experts in medical billing in the dental office to learn how medical billing can provide an additional wallet to help patients in their journey to health and wellness. Finally, this course will provide practical tips to help you see a clear path to integrating sleep medicine into your practice.

Course Presentations By:

Craniofacial Epigenetics and Pneumopedics

Dr. Dave Singh, DMD PhD DDSc

This course  provides an overview of the novel concepts of pneumopedics and craniofacial epigenetics. Clinically, these mechanisms are delivered through biomimetic oral appliance therapy. Dr. Singh covers both genetics and epigenetics of craniofacial development, as well as growth and development of the craniofacial architecture. Dr. Sing provides a thorough overview of these complex subjects in a way easy to assimilate while he sets the scene for how these principles might best be utilized.

G. Dave Singh, DMD, Ph.D., DDSc. is the founder of Vivos Therapeutics, Inc and has served as its Chief Medical Officer and as a director since September 2016. Until June 2019, he also served as President. Dr. Singh is regarded as a leading professor in the field of SDB in all its many forms. He was awarded a grant by the British Society for Developmental Biology (University of Oxford, UK), and later was appointed to the Board of Examiners, Royal College of Surgeons of England. As an “outstanding professor” supported by Harvard University, University of Michigan, and University of Hawaii, he was invited to relocate to the US where he led a NIH-funded program of clinical craniofacial research. Currently, he is a Board Member of the American Sleep and Breathing Association and Member of the World Sleep Society. He has published over 200 articles in peer-reviewed medical, dental and orthodontic literature, and 7 books/chapters. His pioneering research into epigenetic influencers on craniofacial growth and development led to the development of the patented DNA appliance® and mRNA appliance® technology. He holds a DDSc in orthodontics from University of Dundee, UK, a Ph.D. in Craniofacial Development from University of Bristol, UK, and a BDS/DMD in dentistry from University of Newcastle, UK. In 2020, Dr. Singh was given a lifetime achievement award as one of the world’s top 100 doctors in dentistry for his work on sleep apnea.

Craniofacial Deficiencies: A Biological Perspective

Dr. Ben Miraglia, DDS

Our faces are changing, from the time we’re born through our formative years- often resulting in crowded, crooked teeth, and poor sleep. This course will provide an understanding normal craniofacial development in children, how underdevelopment has become common,  and the impact of palatal expansion, myofunctional therapy and nasal breathing on that development.

Dr. Ben Miraglia, a graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, is a member of the ADA, the AGD, the NYSAGD, and the Ninth District Dental Society. He has been in private practice for 25 years, and currently maintains a family practice in Mount Kisco, NY, with a focus on sleep and airway, TMD and occlusion and full-mouth restorative dentistryincluding Invisalign® and dental implants.

Dr. Miraglia is a graduate of the United States Dental Institute where he learned his non-extraction and non-surgical orthodontic philosophy. Since 2008, Dr. Miraglia has been an Invisalign faculty member, speaking internationally to thousands of dentists. Dr. Miraglia received the Invisalign “Educator of the Year Award” for 2013.

Dr. Miraglia lectures nationally on Sleep Disordered Breathing, GP Orthodontics, TMD, Occlusion and Comprehensive Dentistry. He is on the board of directors for American Academy of Physiological Medicine and Dentistry. Dr. Miraglia is a frequent guest speaker at the Dawson Academy, presenting viable solutions to increase oral volume capacity to reduce/eliminate symptoms of Sleep Disordered Breathing and TMD. The Oxygen Advantage

Patrick McKeown, Best-Selling Author

Join Patrick McKeown as he reviews his latest published research on the four phenotypes of obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) which have been identified which have led to interest in novel therapies that provide the basis for personalized treatment protocols.

Mr. McKeown will provide information one each of the four phenotypes of OSAHS and explore how these could be targeted using breathing re-education from three dimensions of functional breathing: biochemical, biomechanical and resonant frequency. Breathing re-education, which will be demonstrated during this course, and myofunctional therapy may be helpful for patients across all four phenotypes of OSAHS.

Mr. McKeown will also teach from his latest book, The Breathing Cure which dedicates a full chapter to dentistry’s roll in identifying and treating OSA.

World- renowned author and breathing practitioner Patrick McKeown was educated at Trinity College in Dublin, before completing his clinical training in the Buteyko Breathing Method at the Buteyko Clinic, Moscow, Russia. This training was accredited by Professor Konstantin Buteyko.

From a young age, Patrick suffered from asthma and relied on an array of medicines and inhalers until he discovered the Buteyko Method at the age of 26, experiencing immediate relief from his symptoms. By applying the principals of the Buteyko Method, Patrick remains asthma-free since then, a feat that over 20 years of medication had failed to accomplish.
